I'm thinking it's about vitality and a positive attitude.

I'm 52. Parents are 85 years old in good health who play bridge and golf (Dad is a great competitor who beats guys 15 years younger than he is), attend lectures on history and geography at their local university, have children and grandchildren who adore them, and lots of friends.

I've been a fitness professional for ten years and I love to teach senior fitness. Why? Because everyone who comes to class is vital. (Do I get primadonnas? Yes. But they are ships that pass in the night.) We move, we box, we strength train with balls, tubes, and weights. The music's great. The energy is great. The humanity is great. The fitness is great.

Getting older? It's fun. More interesting. Challenging. There's more oomph behind the eyes. That's my view, and I'm sticking to it.

What a great and encouraging article. And the fact that I am a trekkie and you mentioned my two fave Star Trek stars is NOT why I'm saying that. :) At least, not the only reason. Kudos to your sweet mom. That's my goal for all my life. Thanks for such a sweet read. Off to share this.

Mr. Master's has hit the nail on the head. His outlook on life and the
examples he gave are just a few of so many "spunkie" folks over 80+.
The way we live our lives and our approach to the daily challenges is what
keep most of us going. Live your life to the utmost as we only go around
once !

Regular exercise hasn't kept my hair from growing gray or my skin from getting wrinkles, but I've seen first hand (over and over again) the power of exercise to revitalize people. Maybe I'll keep running, just in case!

Excellent! Thanks for bringing this study to our attention. BTW my father-in-law is 92 years old, still enjoys an occasional glass of wine and walks three times daily for 30 minutes a walk and he's so healthy that at the age of 90 he had a full knee replacement. Go figure - he's a living example of the benefits of exercise and an inspiration to us all. The study is scientific proof, but let's face it - we really do feel better when we've had a good workout! Thanks again....

I'm a personal trainer and a Master's competitive natural bodybuilder. I started doing yoga about 6 months ago and it is great for muscle recovery after my heavy weight lifting session each week.

Thanks David,
We are discovering profound effects with mindfulness for longevity, espeically with movement. Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais coined the phrase, "Movement is Life, without it, Life is Unthinkable". There are many programs coming out with this influence, BONES FOR LIFE, CHANGE YOUR AGE, SOUNDER SLEEP METHOD, SEEING CLEARLY, GETTING GROUNDED GRACEFULLY and soon to be out SMARTROLLER GUIDE TO OPTIMAL MOVEMENT. All these applications approach vitality in a self guided aspect to learning.

I really enjoyed your metaphor. It is certainly a process that I have been on and will be on for life. Taking off 170lbs I had a lot of trees in my overgrown forest.
